| fffffWhile
working on this essay, I met standard 1.3. I met this standard because in
this essay, my arguments are well constructed and persuasive. The assignment
was to write an essay that addresses key elements of Toni Morrison’s
Song of Solomon. One point in the book we chose to take on was that of racism
between the African American community living in the North and South of
America during the 1940s and 1960s. Believing this topic to be important
not only to the book, but to us as well, we set out to spend a lot of time
and emphasis on writing a convincing argument about the racism shown between
the wealthy and the poor. fffffI consider this essay to be highly applicable to the real world. With racism being still a controversial topic today, I chose to select this piece because it is relevant to the modern world. During research for the essay, I looked back into Song of Solomon and realized that even now classes are divided and similar to how people were treated in the book. One such example of this from my essay is, “This quote, in relation to the syntax it was written in, interrupting dialogue and in distinctive font, suggests that the life of a black man is similar to that of a hunted animal.” This quote describes the feeling a character in Song of Solomon feels while he is gutting a bobcat. Even though the feelings of racism are sometimes subtle like during the gutting of the bobcat, themes of racism and being Black in America are still prominent and significant today. |

| fffffWorking
on my essay on Jamaica Kincaid’s A Small Place, I worked hard to
meet standard 2.2. (Writing Responses to Literature). The story being
based on the island of Antigua is a historical fiction, written in a very
original style, was the basis of my essay. The main topic of the essay
is the belief that Antigua has potential to achieve great things, but
the different views on Antigua’s state shown within the narrative
and the island’s corruption hamper its chances to realize them.
Furthermore, my essay reflects on the books main theme, the island’s
identity, making it a deeply analytical look at A Small Place. fffffWhat I found most difficult in writing this essay was addressing the story’s vital theme of multiple identities. This challenged me, because it was tough writing about not only one, but three personalities for a culture. To overcome this task, I chose to write about how these personalities were formed and why they continue to exist. A good example of this is the “lunatic voice” of the Antiguan, as it is the side that continually demeans and disgraces itself everyday. I said I believe this side exists because of the corrupt politics that run the country into lunacy, and it continues to be in a state of lunacy because the leadership only allows that much. |
