The
purpose of emulating somebody’s poem was to learn different styles
and be able to copy them. When I read l(a its unique style impressed
me so much that I decided to emulate this poem.
I tried to have a title that suggests which poem I emulated. Although
I did not want my title to be l(a I tried to leave one of the letters.
In the poem I wrote the speaker is not specified, just as in l(a. I
used the same organization: a short sentence inside the parenthesis
is put between the letters of the word which expressed feelings about
the sentence. I used two letters on one line inside the parenthesis,
and more than two outside. Cummings’s word outside is “loneliness”,
a noun that expresses feelings of the person. I chose “pride”
which serves the same function. Inside the parenthesis Cummings used
imagery of the leaf that falls. Trying to use natural imagery, I wrote
“a flower blooms” to describe “pride”.
This exercise was challenging and yet creative because that was the
first time I had emulated poetry.
