My Best English Work

_____Even though in my AP English Literature class a lot of the curriculum was drafted towards preparing for the AP Exam, a lot of creativity was blended into different assignments. For instance, after reading a revisionist novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, written in response to Jane Eyre, we needed to do a revisionist writing of any work of fiction or myth of our choice. I chose to rewrite a myth of Greece about Medusa. I wrote a short story from the point of view of Medusa, and I told the story of how she was raped by Poseidon and punished by Athena. Another creative piece which I wrote this year is a poem that follows the structure of a villanelle. I've written poems before, but I've never tried writing one within a form. Both of these assignments satisfy writing standards: 1.5 Use language in natural, fresh, and vivid ways to establish a specific tone and 2.3 Write reflective compositions.

_____ I think these two pieces were my best work, because they showed my capability to be creative within certain restrictions. In the revisionist writing assignment, I told the original story from a perspective that is not commonly known and I needed to imagine a lot of Medusa's feelings. However, no matter how I want to create her as a character, I needed to stay within the Greek myth that she is a monster that petrifies people. For example, in my story, Medusa appears sentimental and loyal but also dangerous 'Soon after I realize I turn animals into stones. ... Still, fools came visit and never found their way back. Only my sisters can resist the horrible curse spoken from my glances.' Also, in the poem assignment, even though I was free to write about anything I wanted to, I needed to follow the rules of writing a villanelle- rhyming patterns, number of lines in each stanza etc. I think these two assignments showed my maturity as a writer who can twist around conventions and show uniqueness and creativity within her work.
