• Standard: Historical Interpretation #8 Students conduct cost/benefit analyses and apply basic economic indicators to analyze the aggregate economic behavior of the U.S. economy

• Assignment Name: My Budget

• Objective: Research information (prices) about the cost and benefits of living on our own using $10,000.

• Question Prompt: How can I apply this to the real world?

In the assignment, “My Budget”, I had to research different expenses that I would have to pay if I lived on my own. Then I used Microsoft Excel to calculate the different bills and taxes I would have to pay. I typed up an essay including graphs from the Excel chart explaining my budget and my decisions. The objective was to create a budget with a given income and make certain budget decisions. There were quite a few solutions that I came up with to save more of my money. The standard I met writing this essay was Historical Interpretation #8. I had to research various expenses from living in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. (and most popular!), San Francisco.

The information I found during this project was extremely useful because I can use it in the real world. It’s helpful that we did this project so that I have an idea about how much money I would need to spend and save when I end up living on my own. Since I’m going to college soon, I now have knowledge of what my bills and taxes will be looking like next year. I have my budget and expenditures all in mind already. I will take the Muni bus to school each morning and will spend less on entertainment that is unnecessary. I’m already a great saver when it comes to money but now I will become a successful saver thanks to this project. I have two regular jobs that I work and numerous odd jobs that I get paid for and a bank account. Both a checking and savings account at Wells Fargo. Similar to my budget in the project, I put in at least $50 every two weeks to my savings and the rest goes into my checking which is for my discretionary purchases. Saving is easier for me now because I have already created a budget so I have an early start.
