Standard: 8. Students conduct cost/benefit analyses and apply basic economic indicators to analyze the aggregate economic behavior of the U.S. economy

• Assignment Name: Budget Project Written Response

• Objective: To write a budget according to our career

• Question Prompt: How can I apply this to the real world?

In the Budget Project Written Response, I had to write out a budget according to what my career was, a waitress. We were all given education levels were we had to choose a job that requires a certain education level. Based on my level of schooling, a high school drop out, I chose the job of a waitress. In writing my response I met the standard, “Students conduct cost/benefit analyses and apply basic economic indicators to analyze economic behavior.” I met this standard by researching average expenses, an annual salary for my job, and the taxes that I needed to pay. From the research, I was able to conduct a budget that allowed me to analyze the economic behavior of my career. Using an Excel chart, I conducted a table to show how my salary was being divided up for my monthly expenses. Also, I created pie graph to show how much of my money was going into different expenses and a graph to show what percent of my money is for savings, expenditures, and discretionary funds. Since, I was a waitress living in the Bay area; the cost of living was very expensive. I couldn’t afford many things such as a nice apartment, car, cell phone, and personal care items. With the career that I had there wasn’t a real benefit to my job besides receiving tips. In this written response it allowed me to gain knowledge in how I can apply this project to the real world.

With this project, it allowed me to realize how expensive the world really is. Also, it taught me how important it is to keep track of money and to start saving now. Not only did I learn how to keep a budget I learned that the more education you receive the better your choices are in a career. As a result, I am more aware of the expenses and the cost of living, I will face some day. In addition, I will know how to divide my income and will be more ready for future expenses.
