Standard: This internship met the standards
1.0 and 2.4 of the English Language Arts Content standards for California
public Schools. Connections across Content Reflection Right before I finished my junior year I applied to an internship called
SEP (Science and Health Education Program),where I worked as an intern
throughout the summer of 2006. I have selected this internship as a Connection
across Content in my digital portfolio for I saw how the skills I have
learned in my English class could directly connect with what I had to
do in the SEP internship. Being involved in this summer internship was an epiphany that allowed
me to observe how my English class could help me have connections in the
real world. For example, in the internship I had to speak concisely and
clearly to the scientists that surrounded me in the Lab where I worked.
I mostly talked about science. I had to learn how to pronounce the word
“Chlamydomonas,” because that was the name of the cells I
had to work with. I had to listen carefully to understand what the scientists
were talking about. Therefore, this science internship met the CA English
Listening and Speaking standard 1.0. In addition to how I could connect my English class to the SEP internship I had to perform a Power Point Presentation to demonstrate what I learned. I had to make a Power Point Presentation to talk about my results in the Lab. For this reason this internship also met the Listening and speaking standard 2.4, for I had to speak publicly. I guided my audience through my Power Point Presentation which I had created previously. During this conference I had to speak loudly and clearly so that the audience could hear me. On the other hand, I also had to listen to questions the audience asked me and respond to them eloquently. To see what I learned in the SEP internship click here!
