• Standard: Writing 1.9
Revise text to highlight the individual voice, improve sentence variety
and style, and enhance subtlety of meaning and tone in ways that are consistent
with the purpose, audience, and genre. Boundary Breaking Revision Project was the semester final I did for my AP Literature class. This project was actually a revision of a previous assignment, which is called the Time Travel Story. In order to complete the project, I needed to revise four times with different syntax and sentence patterns to make it a better piece. The syntax and sentence patterns that I used to improve my story consisted of periodic sentences, cumulative sentences, complex sentences, and so on. By finishing this project, I met the Writing Standard 1.9 to revise a text. This project emphasizes the improvement of my writing skills. I had just learned about various syntax and sentence patterns prior to the semester final. However, I didn’t get to know how to apply them to my writings very well. By practicing using them in my semester final, I became more familiar with them. Now, I know at a certain circumstance, I need to use a particular type of syntax, and at another circumstance, I need to use another type of syntax. For example, simple sentences can not only make the reading become easier, but also emphasize the significant meaning among the words. Likewise, in my revision project, I used plenty of simple sentences in the first paragraph to describe the main character, “In the year of 2018. He was 30 years old. He became the king of the planet. It was a large blueberry kingdom. Many people moved there from the Earth.” I used this pattern so that readers could easily understand that my character, Blueberry, is such a great person. With the knowledge and skills of syntax and sentence patterns, my stories become more creative and interesting, and my essays became more convincing and organized.
