  • Standard: 5 Students construct and test hypotheses; collect, evaluate, and employ information from multiple primary and secondary sources; and apply it in oral and written presentations. (RESEARCH)
  • Assignment Name: Budget Project
  • Objective of Assignment: To estimate the budget for a year
  • Reflective Prompt: How can I apply this to the real world?

In the Budget Project, I created a budget using Excel. To use Excel, first I had to make a chart, which lists all the categories that I need to spend my money on. Then I needed to do some research to find out how much I have to pay for each category. I looked up some sites, such as the 2005 Tax Table, RentNet, and so on. And I looked for information on expenditures on these sites. For example, housing, cars, taxes, phone, etc. After I found all the information, I put the information in Excel corresponding to each category. Then I calculated my total amount of my discretionary, expenditures, and income by entering different equations in Excel. Lastly I did some analysis on the research. Finishing this project allowed me to meet standard 5, which is to do research.

The Budget Project not only fulfilled the purpose of the assignment from the Economics class, but also offered me skills that I can use in the real world. Since I created a budget for the whole year, I learned how to organize my finances. I learned that if I don't want to have debt, I need to reduce the money I spend on each category. I also understand that it's better to plan how much money to spend each month, because then I will not go into debt and I will be able to save money.
