Standard: W 2.2 – Response to Literature • Objective: To understand the Shakespearian novel: Hamlet, and to be able to write about it. • Question
Prompt: How has this piece grown compared to others? This featured piece is most definitely something that has grown through the work of writing. I felt that this piece met its standards through quality rather than quantity. Writing the Hamlet essay was, at the time, one of the most frustrating essays that I had to write. The reason for this is because we, as students, had some limitations. We were specifically told to write an essay, based on the tragedy of Hamlet, in third person. In other words, we cannot use the words: "I," "I’m," "you," "you’re" etc. As a student, I still find myself trying to get out of that habit of always using non-specific language. As we all know in time all that will change. One thing that I noticed in my writing over the years is my grammar and punctuation. It’s rather obvious, every year a student learns something new, no matter which subject. Writing was one of the most hated things I had to do, I never liked writing essays, but now it’s a different story. I find it less hard and a little fun, because you never know what you’ll write on the next line. Here’s an excerpt from my Hamlet essay: "'I’ll have these players play something like the murder of my father before mine uncle: I’ll observe his looks;' (Act II. Scene ii). Hamlet calls forth a play of his father’s death….Hamlet feels that if he can organize an exact play of his father’s death, then, only then, would he find out if his uncle is the true murderer." By looking through previous assignments over the years, I saw the improvement in almost all parts of writing. I felt rather impressed in my progress now knowing that this school has something to offer. |
