- Standard: 3.0 Literary Response and Analysis
- Assignment Name: Letter to Frederick Douglass
- Objective of Assignment: To write a letter to Frederick Douglass
- Reflective Prompt (Choose one.): How is this piece an example of my
intellectual growth as a student?
Creating a letter to Frederick Douglass was probably one of my most prized
pieces, intellectually. In order to do this assignment we, as a class,
had to read about Frederick Douglass’s (aka F.D.) life, specifically
the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.”
As a class we read the book to get an understanding on what exactly F.D.
has been through. Soon after finishing the book, I had to draft a letter
to F.D. explaining my thoughts about his experiences through his entire
life. Before starting I had to select a specific area in which I can write
to him about, surely enough I had chosen to write about education and
what he had been through to achieve the level of intellect he has accomplished.
Now I had all the pieces to thoughtfully compose a final letter to Frederick
Douglass. I had typed a whopping 4 paragraphs...but that is because it
was a requirement. Responding to some of the events that partaken in his
life certainly made me feel that I have met the writing standard 3.0,
which is a “Literary Response and Analysis.”
After completing this piece some time ago and re-reading it recently,
I truly feel that this letter was one of the best examples of my intellectual
growth over the some-what intense times through my writing “career.”
When reading the letter, I was a little blown away due to the fact that
I, Henry Mejia, had written this. It just goes to show you that having
the right teacher in the English department can truly polish your writing
skills and effectiveness.
