This assignment Frederick
Douglass Letter met the standard 3.0 literary responses and analysis.
For this assignment, I first read the book about Frederick Douglass. He
was one of the slaves in his book that tried to escape from being a slave.
Then I analyzed some quotes and wrote a letter for him about how I related
my life to his life. The way I did this was I chose the quote, “You
have seen how a man was made a slave, you shall see how a slave was made
a man.” In this story, slaves don’t just do what they want.
They had to ask permission or they do things based on what their master
says, and that’s how I related my life to his life. Even though
I am free in many ways, I have to ask my mother's permission before I
can do what I want to do in my life. This assignment that I did in American Literature class connects to U.S. History class, because I also studied about slaves like Frederick Douglass in U.S. History class. In American Literature class, I used some of the words that I also can see in the U.S. History class, such as "privilege" and "segregation". For this project, I talked about Jim Crow in both subjects. Jim Crow is an African American experience of segregation from the 1870's through the 1950's. Frederick Douglass was segregated from African American slaves during his quest for freedom. He did not have privileges to study in school, but he worked to buy his freedom. He also learned by himself. He was determined to learn how to read and write and he used all his determination to learn. |
